Flooding in an Angus town caused road closures and came inches away from causing major damage to nearby homes at the weekend.
Around 100 homes were also left without water for several hours as emergency services helped the water board get to the bottom of flooding that toppled a wall and damaged a garage.
Police confirmed reports of flooding at St Abbs Road in Arbroath soon after noon on Saturday and further reports were made from the adjacent Hayshead Road around 12.50pm.
Inspector Graham Young said a burst water main caused “significant flooding” on the two roads at that time.
Water had entered two homes in the area and officers had put diversions in place.
“The water board are in attendance, and the council has been notified,” he added.
“The fire service was also requested to help deal with the water, which subsided fairly quickly, but there are reports of flood damage in two houses.”
A garden wall at St Abbs Road crumbled on to a garage at Hayshead Road, such was the volume of water threatening the houses.
Fire service watch manager Stephen Caird said the water was shut off and pumping began just in time.
Two appliances from Arbroath attended along with an environmental protection unit, which has small pumps that were used to get into the foundations.
“The flood was caused by a cracked water main,” he said. “It was still coming down into St Abbs Road when we were arriving at the scene.
“The problem for the houses was it was sitting in the hollow in the road.
“There were five or six properties at which the water was a centimetre off the top of their doorsteps and the foundations had let water in.
“We pumped the foundations once the water board had isolated the supply to the cracked main.”
A stop notice was issued at 1.30pm and the fire crews left for their station just after 2pm.
A Scottish Water spokeswoman said: “Our team of engineers carried out emergency repairs on a 12-inch main on St Abbs Road, Arbroath.
“Water was rezoned from elsewhere in the network while the repair was taking place.
“All of the 100 or so properties that experienced low or no water pressure during this time were back in supply by the evening.
“The burst resulted in some property damage and we have been liaising directly with these customers.
“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience experienced while we carried out this vital repair work.”
