Police still investigating Lunan Bay bone discovery

Forensic specialists are still examining the origin of human remains found in Angus a month ago.

A large police probe was sparked when a bone was discovered near Lunan Bay last month.

The bone is understood to be from a human jaw, although this has not been officially confirmed.

A team of around half a dozen officers were involved in combing the beach and dunes in the area south of Lunan Bay, between Redcastle and Ethie Haven.

Police Scotland have confirmed forensic examination is still to conclusively determine the bone’s origin and “inquiries are continuing”.

The alarm was raised on January 13 when it is understood a member of the public found the bone next to the coastal path.

An area of long grass, which lies between the path and the beach, was cordoned off with police tape.

Officers dressed in waterproofs spent the next two days scouring the area, including checking seal and bird carcasses which had been washed up by recent storms. No other bones were discovered.

The families of local missing people in the area were contacted by police.
