The social club of the Royal British Legion Scotland in Montrose is back on the brink of closing its doors after a successful year-long battle to secure its future.
Following an extraordinary general meeting last spring an appeal was launched for members and supporters to help the group out and that generated a fantastic response of donations and practical support to run events.
Lunches on the last Sunday of each month, special event nights including a June Christmas party and triathlon sports nights between the Legion, Montrose emergency services and Montrose Academy teams have all been staged.
Legion spokesman Ian Robb said: “This hard work has kept us very much alive and the future of the club is in the members’ hands.
“To enable it to go on we need members to show commitment and to stimulate activities by coming along,”
He described a turnout of 15 people at the club’s recent annual general meeting out of a membership of over 200 as “depressing”.
“Unless a greater attendance at the rescheduled meeting for February 1 at 7pm is achieved then we will have no other option but to close the doors until a new committee can be appointed to run the club’s affairs,” said Mr Robb.
“The matter is now in the paid up members’ hands to stop the apathy that is creeping in.
“There is no plan or intention for the closure of the premises or club, so please ignore all the rumours and get behind us.”
Forthcoming events include a social club night on January 20 with Chad Neighbour talking on philately and the Second World War and a non-stop darts contest on January 23 from noon to midnight.
On February 5 a race night is being staged with Montrose emergency services in aid of the Diabetic Association, with a prize raffle which includes a signed Manchester United team shirt.
