A rare military uniform belonging to the Queen Mother’s brother has gone on display for the first time at Glamis Castle.
The black frock coat and matching cap was worn by Patrick Bowes Lyon, the 15th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, when he was a member of the Scots Guards around 100 years ago.
The Earl served with the Scots Guards when the First World War broke out and later served in France with the Black Watch. He was wounded in 1915 and returned home.
The uniform has remained in the family ever since and now forms part of an exhibition running at the castle, focusing on the armed forces.
This features several other uniforms as well as more than 1,000 hand-painted soldiers and 4,000 miniature cardboard figures collected by Dundee man Stewart Smith over the last 40 years. The exhibition will remain on display for the rest of the season.
Mr Bowes-Lyon was born in 1884 and succeeded to the title on the death of his father, Claude, in November 1944. After being seriously ill for several months, he died in 1949 at the age of 64.
