Arbroath woman bit and spat on police officers

A 61-year-old woman bit and spat on police officers as she was arrested for posting a note to her neighbour.

Sawarn Gill, of Weavers Close, Arbroath, appeared from custody at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Monday following the attack on Friday.

The court heard that Gill had put a note through her upstairs neighbour’s door saying she would like to speak to him.

Defence agent Billy Rennie said the apology letter was signed “Love you pal. You know who”.

He added: “The problem was her manner of reaction to the arrival of the police.”

Gill admitted flouting bail conditions, just hours after they were set, during the incident on Friday.

She further admitted assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty by punching them in the head and repeatedly punching and kicking their body.

Two charges of biting an officer on the leg and spitting on an officer were admitted, as was a charge of scratching a police officer and repeatedly punching and kicking them on the body.

Mr Rennie said there was a recommendation that Gill see a doctor and that a review of her medication be carried out. He said Gill had not come to the attention of the court since 2003.

He added: “There seems to be a suggestion in the report by Dr Rodriguez that she makes contact with him to see if he can assist with the problems that she clearly has currently.”

Depute fiscal Hazel Anderson said Gill had been determined sane in a psychological assessment.

Sheriff Mark Thorley asked Mr Rennie and Ms Anderson how the court could keep the neighbours apart.

Mr Rennie said his client would have no reason to go upstairs and there would be no risk of them meeting other than by chance.

Sentence was deferred until June 4 and bail was granted on the condition that Gill does not approach her neighbour.

Gill was also ordered to attend a meeting with Dr Rodriguez.
