Angus Council has pledged to move a flashing sign ordering motorists to keep to 30mph on a notorious stretch of road after a barrage of complaints.
Residents living on and around the A935 Montrose to Brechin road have voiced their anger about drivers travelling at excessive speed and the local authority aimed to tackle the problem by introducing the sign to reinforce the speed limit.
However the notice, at the entrance to Montrose near the Monarch of the Glen retirement park, is obscured almost entirely by trees.
This means many motorists are continuing to travel at speeds which often exceed 50mph, causing great alarm to many elderly people living nearby.
Piano tuner Rod Morrison (61), who moved to the Monarch of the Glen park from Aberdeen, contacted The Courier to voice his concerns.
He said, “People are doing speeds of 50mph sometimes more all the time here. But how is this sign supposed to help if people can’t see it?
“It’s an accident waiting to happen. I see these signs in other places and they do seem to work so I think it’s important it is moved to a place where people can see it.
“There are lots of old people around here and this can be very frightening for them.”
Mr Morrison was so worried at the prospect of a fatality on the road that he raised the matter with local police officers and council officials, as well as Angus North and the Mearns MSP Nigel Don.
Another local driver, who asked not be named, termed the issue “outrageous.”
He added, “Why would they spend money doing this? It’s not going to do any good to anyone if we can’t see it.
“Around three quarters of the sign is covered by the trees. It’s pretty bad.”
When presented with the concerns, an Angus Council spokeswoman said, “We are arranging to have the sign moved within the next few days.”
