An elderly man has died following a horrific crash in rural Angus.
The 82-year-old pulled out of Wester Lownie Farm near Forfar when his Mercedes was involved in a collision with a recovery lorry carrying two vehicles.
The Volvo lorry was heading easterly from Dunnichen around 3.35pm on Wednesday when the accident happened.
The lorry driver was shaken but unhurt.
Emergency services raced to the scene but the man was pronounced dead by paramedics.
The road remained closed late last night as investigations into the fatal crash continued.
Local councillor Ewan Smith spoke of his shock at hearing of the accident.
He said: ”It’s an incredible tragedy and my thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time.”
A police spokesman said the 82-year-old had been identified as being local to the area.
The scene of the accident was on a minor road. However, it is also busy as it is the main route used by most people travelling from Letham into Forfar.
Arbroath fire station manager Fraser Scott said: “We sent two appliances and a heavy rescue unit. We arrived and found there had been a collision between a lorry and a car.
“Unfortunately there was a fatality. The gentleman who was driving the car was subsequently declared deceased by the ambulance service.
“It was then a case of the police carrying out an investigation into the accident.
“We stood by until they said that we could remove the individual from the car using hydraulic cutting gear. We were there for a couple of hours while the incident was ongoing and made the scene safe.”
Anyone in the area at the time who saw the accident should contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.
