A 24-year-old Montrose man was fined £250 by Sheriff Peter Paterson at Arbroath Sheriff Court yesterday.
Stuart Laing, of High Street, appeared from custody and admitted assaulting a man on George Street, Montrose, on May 19 by repeatedly punching him on the head to his injury.
Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said the victim and his partner had come out of the Yard Nightclub and were sitting on a window sill waiting for a pre-booked taxi.
She said Laing became involved in a dispute and began repeatedly punching him on the head, which was witnessed by two police officers.
An ambulance was called and paramedics treated the victim at the scene. He had suffered bruising to the left side of his face and various scrapes.
He also broke his glasses but he did not require hospital treatment.
A defence agent said Laing’s recollection was there had been an argument between the couple and he stepped in believing the female was being assaulted.
He said: “His recollection is somewhat jaded by drink.”
