An Angus serial offender has been sent to prison for eight months.
James McKelvie, 24, of Goosecroft, Forfar, was sentenced when he appeared from custody at Forfar Sheriff Court on Thursday.
He had previously admitted a catalogue of offences dating back over the past 12 months which included a string of thefts and making racists remarks.
McKelvie pleaded guilty to stealing goods from a Forfar Athletic cabin on July 6 last year, stealing razors from Aldi on Craig o’ Loch Road on October 20, and then making racist remarks to a member of staff there two days later.
He also refused to leave the Aldi store on Craig o’ loch Road on October 22, broke bail conditions by not signing in to Forfar police station on a daily basis, and stole two packets of chicken from Aldi on Craig o’ Loch Road on June 11 last year.
McKelvie’s defence solicitor Bob Bruce told Sheriff Kevin Veal that his client had always had a problem with drink and drugs but that he was a very “congenial person when not under the influence”.
He recommended that McKelvie be placed on a drug testing and treatment order as an alternative to custody, but Sheriff Veal decided to return the accused to jail, where he had been remanded since June 10.
McKelvie also had his sentence deferred for good behaviour on another charge until September 26.
