An Angus artist is creating an unusual piece of porcelain to mark the bicentenary of the Bell Rock Lighthouse.
Maralyn Reed-Wood opened Redcastle Pottery near Inverkeilor in September last year after moving from Glasgow.
The potter has been selling her work for over 35 years and was so struck by the history surrounding the world-renowned lighthouse that she wanted to get involved in the Year of the Light celebrations.
Once finished, the artwork will go on display at an exhibition in Arbroath from July 16 until August 24 before being transferred to the RRS Discovery in Dundee for a further show.
Maralyn said, “There are a lot of people doing paintings of the lighthouse but I wanted to do something that would show it in a different way.
“What I wanted to do was build a tower that would see it from a distance and allow people to view all angles.
“Each part of the tower will have a different aspect of Angus and it is quite large so it will have to be moved in sections. I have been collecting things from Lunan Bay to use to make impressions, because I wanted it to have real things from the area on it.
“It is more than just a piece of porcelain, in a way it is a time capsule.”
The piece will be triple fired in the kiln at Maralyn’s workshop at more than 1300 degrees.
She added, “I am really glad I could get involved with the 200th anniversary because the Bell Rock is the most amazing structure in the whole area. I think people forget what a huge difference it made to saving lives.”The website www.bell rock.org.uk has received hits from over 165 countries including Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Holland, Germany, Norway, Czech Republic and Brazil. An information page about the Year of the Light was placed on www.angusahead.com in June and there have now been almost 10,000 page views with 90% from UK visitors.
