Mr Mathers was born in Dundee Street, Carnoustie, and was the only son of the late David and Mabel Mathers of Mathers Hotel, Dundee. He was educated at Dundee High then attended Dundee University where he studied engineering. He later joined the Royal Air Force and served in the Middle East. Mr Mathers then returned to Dundee and became a teacher of mathematics in some of the country schools, including Coupar Angus. He continued his love of flying with his own aircraft, a DH Chipmunk, which was based in Perth. His first love was sports cars, especially Jaguars, and he was also a keen bridge player. Mr Mathers never married and he is survived by two sisters. He was chairman of the Kirk Session of Dundee Congregational Church and his funeral will be held at Dundee Crematorium at 10.15am on Monday.
