ByThe Courier Reporter
Brechin has retaken its place at the centre of the international photographic stage with the return of a major exhibition after a 90-year gap.
The weekend saw the official opening of the 90th Scottish International Salon, which this year drew an astonishing array of high-quality entries from 638 photographers in 47 countries including China, South Africa Vietnam and New Zealand.
The selected 200 images judged to be the most outstanding in the salon will be on show in the Mechanics’ Institute until June 8.
A winners’ ceremony on Saturday was followed by an evening of photo-graphy by John Macpherson with a lecture entitled Why Photography Matters.
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Brechin Photographic Society, an exhibition of images by members is also being presented at the Townhouse Museum, Brechin, during the same period.
Both exhibitions are free of charge. The 1st Scottish National Photographic Salon was held at the Sandeman Art Gallery in Perth, from February 13 to 27 1904.
