A man was so drunk he called 999 from the back of a police car claiming he was being kidnapped.
Sean Johnston, of Kestrel Place, Montrose, appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Tuesday following the incident on December 16.
The court heard the 21-year-old became aggressive with police and paramedics after he was found in the “foetal position” between two bollards on North Esk Street, Montrose.
Johnston admitted resisting arrest by repeatedly struggling with officers, violently lashing out with his arms, refusing to cooperate and refusing to desist.
He further admitted assaulting a female ambulance technician by lunging at her and attempting to punch her.
Depute fiscal Hazel Anderson said officers had first noticed Johnston lying in the street around 1.45am.
She added: “He was placed in the patrol vehicle and taken to his parents’ address however, his parents couldn’t be roused.
“After some delay he appeared more alert and the officers decided he was in a condition to return home.”
As he was exiting the vehicle Johnston called 999 to make a report he had been kidnapped. He then attempted to run away from the car but was seen to fall heavily to the ground.
Paramedics arrived but Johnston became “belligerent” and attempted to punch one of the crew.
He then became violent with the police officers and had to be restrained.
Sheriff Peter Paterson fined Johnston £300 and ordered he pay £100 compensation to the paramedic.
