Dunnottar Castle in the Mearns has been voted the Eighth Wonder of the World by Scots.
The castle near Stonehaven was the ‘home’ of the heroine Merida in the Disney-Pixar Oscar-winning film Brave.
It collected 1,836 votes and finished more than 600 in front of nearest rivals, The Cuillin on the Isle of Skye, and the Callanish Stones on Lewis.
It also staved off competition from Edinburgh Castle, the Forth Road Bridge and the Old Course at St Andrews.
The castle will now be put forward into a global competition to find the Eighth Wonder of the World.
The victory came just a week after Mearns residents hit out at VisitScotland for moving the goalposts when the poll deadline was extended.
The tourism agency was accused of “making up the rules” after the deadline was moved and the Striding Arches sculpture was added to the entry list.
Michelle Ward, a director of the Stonehaven Town Partnership, said: “It’s the place where, as a child, you slew dragons and hunted ghosts and where you bring your own children to do the same.
“It’s the picture on the wall when you live far from your homeland that tugs at your heartstrings every time you look at it.”
