Angus man held knives while arguing with ex-partner

A former Angus man who acted aggressively towards his ex-partner after she dumped him has been ordered to be of good behaviour for a year at Forfar Sheriff Court.

John Buckley, 25, formerly of Kirriemuir, now living in Sunderland, was described as a first offender who has now left the area following the break-up.

Buckley admitted shouting aggressively towards his ex-partner while holding knives on May 4 at Hillhead Terrace.

The court heard Buckley’s ex-partner ended things with him on the morning of the incident but he appeared to take it well and did not react badly.

They spent the morning watching television together and nothing effectively was said.

Depute fiscal Eilidh Robertson said his ex-partner went out to meet a friend but returned later at lunchtime and found him drinking with a friend.

She joined them and they continued to consume alcohol. They decided to go to get something to eat around 6pm but at this point Buckley began bickering with her about why the relationship ended.

The argument then became heated.

Ms Robertson said Buckley went to the kitchen and she followed him.

She said: “He picked up two knives and held one in each hand and started shouting at her.

“She grabbed him and tried to get the knives out of his hands. A struggle ensued and he eventually let go. He came back through to the living room, when he produced a smaller knife from his pocket.

“She was becoming increasingly concerned.”

Buckley grabbed her and threw her into the hall, where she fell against a radiator. She curled up into a ball on the floor and was crying heavily.

Buckley was told to pack his bags and get out. The incident was reported to the police.

Buckley will appear again in Forfar on May 22 next year.
