A former consultant physician and lecturer has died peacefully at his home. He was 87.
Dr Cyril Cohen was born on November 2 1925 in Manchester and was educated at Manchester Central High School. On finishing his medical training at Victoria University, Dr Cohen entered national service at the end of the Second World War.
Dr Cohen went into geriatric medicine in 1952 and began work at Stracathro Hospital in 1955.
His widow, Dr Betty Cohen, said: “He came to Stracathro for six months and ended up staying.”
The couple met in 1956 as Betty was a dietician at the hospital, and the couple were married in 1967 after Mrs Cohen went to university to pursue a medical diploma.
Their wedding was held in Edinburgh, midway between Manchester and Angus. Dr Cohen moved up to registrar at the hospital and became a consultant, and his wife believes he was among the youngest in Scotland.
His favourite place was Aberlemno, where the couple lived together for more than 40 years. Dr Cohen retired from Aberlemno Community Council in 2004 and had been a founding member in 1977.
In 1986 he was awarded the OBE for his services to medicine in the Scottish Hospitals Advisory Service. Dr Cohen, who was predeceased by son Michael, is survived by Betty and son David.
Friends and family without “dark clothes or long faces” are invited to a funeral service in Parkgrove Crematorium, Friockheim, at 11.30am on Tuesday and the Northern Hotel in Brechin thereafter.
