Plans to cut recycling services across Angus have spurred members of the community to protest and create an online petition.
As budget pressures continue to bite, councillors will be asked to approve closing centres in Brechin, Kirriemuir, Forfar, Carnoustie, and Monifieth.
Arbroath and Montrose recycling centres would be improved and a new one built between Forfar and Kirriemuir dropping the overall number from seven to three.
Following a report in The Courier, residents began to respond to the proposals with an online petition, which is approaching its 2500-name target.
One local campaigner said a peaceful protest organised through the OurCarnoustie Facebook group demonstrated how members of her community feel about the moves.
Laura-May Kennedy said the protest in Balmachie Road was “quite last minute” but more people intend to go to the meeting on Tuesday.
“People were obviously angry about it but needed direction,” she said. “So it was suggested we gather in Carnoustie on Saturday morning.
“I can totally understand where this is coming from. Times are hard.
“But there are a lot of questions that still need to be answered, about cost, and the Scottish Government has identified zero waste and carbon reduction targets which we will all have to meet.
“How are they going to hit that when some people can’t get to a recycling centre?”
A further protest has been planned for 1.30pm on Tuesday outside the Town and County Hall in Forfar, prior to the meeting of Angus Council’s communities committee at 2pm.
OurCarnoustie has also asked those supporting the retention of recycling centres to tape a cross to their bins.
A spokesman for OurCarnoustie posted: “Show your support for keeping our recycling facilities in Carnoustie by placing a cross on your bins whichever colour.
“Let’s see all bins in Carnoustie adorned with crosses.”
They hope that the practice of taping crosses to recycling bins can migrate across Angus to demonstrate the extent of public opposition to these recycling plans.
A Facebook page entitled Save Angus Recycling Centres has been created and has attracted more than 1,900 “likes”.
