Scottish Water wants to build an above-ground control room for an Arbroath sewage pumping station because it is worried underground electronics might be flooded.
It is seeking planning permission from Angus Council for the 10ft kiosk at Danger Point, which is within a conservation area.
The company said: “The pumps and chambers including the controls and electronics are all below ground.
“The sensitive electronics are vulnerable to flooding and interruption to pumping will have serious implications for Scottish Water customers throughout Arbroath.
“Access to the controls is via an existing chamber below ground and operatives are required to access a confined space which is not in line with best practice in terms of safety.
“Scottish Water regards this as an essential upgrade to existing infrastructure and there is no option but to erect the kiosk above ground.
“However, to mitigate potential effects on the visual amenity of the residents in the nearby houses on Old Shore Head, the kiosk has been orientated so that the narrowest dimension is facing the houses.”
The company is proposing to paint the structure black to match nearby street furniture. Some backfilling of the sloping site would be needed to create a level platform, and a retaining wall would be built.
