Plans to create a one-way route in central Arbroath are set to be scrapped after complaints by businesses.
Following a traffic management review in 2011, Angus Council had been proposing to make Ladybridge Street eastbound only between East Grimsby and Marketgate.
Stuarts Fresh Fish objected, saying this would make it awkward and potentially unsafe to get in and out of its premises, with vehicles having to reverse against the traffic flow.
A second formal objection came from Mackay Boat Builders, which said it would take longer for its vehicles to get from its Old Shore Head premises to the west side of the harbour. Its business includes the maintenance of vessels moored there.
The only alternative route would be via Brothock Bridge and Burnside Drive. As this would involve journeys by slow moving vehicles such as forklift trucks and cranes, traffic could be hindered.
A report to be considered by councillors says that in light of these concerns the head of roads now considers the one-way proposal would have a detrimental effect on traffic safety by forcing unsuitable types of vehicles on to major routes.
