The condition of roads in Angus is among the best in Scotland, the local authority’s infrastructure services committee has been told.
According to strategic director of communities Alan McKeown’s report, the county remains in the “first quartile of authorities across Scotland”.
The Scottish Road Maintenance Condition Survey states Angus Council has 27.9% of its road network in the red and amber on its road condition index sixth place among local authorities.
Brechin and Edzell independent councillor Bob Myles said at a meeting in Forfar: “When you see the condition of the roads compared to other areas, I think we do pretty well in Angus.”
Council leader and Kirriemuir SNP councillor Iain Gaul said a recent “accusation” by an insurance company that road users in the county are susceptible to making claims based on damage caused by roads is “nonsense”.
Arbroath SNP councillor Alex King said: “Considering the effect of winter maintenance on the budget over the last two or three years, I think we’re doing very well.”
A suggested improvement in condition is likely to be a result of changes to calculation, according to Mr McKeown.
