Donald McMahon, of Carnoustie, has died at the age of 74 after a long battle with illness.
Mr McMahon was born and bred in Coatbridge. He spent a year studying at Glasgow radio college after leaving school before joining the Merchant Navy in 1956 as a radio operator.
In 1957, he met a girl in Vancouver who would later become his wife. Mr McMahon and Sue struck up a long-distance friendship before they were married in Canada in 1964.
After marrying, the couple moved to Carnoustie where Mr McMahon became a TV engineer. He worked in Carnoustie, Arbroath and latterly Dundee before he retired through ill health just before he was 65.
A verger at the Church of the Holy Rood in Carnoustie, Mr McMahon was also a great lover of history and research. He was often called on to help people who were interested in their own family history.
Mr McMahon was also a much-loved father of Malcolm and Graham and a devoted grandfather to two-year-old Lorenzo.
