It’s the weekend when Peter Pan plays second fiddle to Kirriemuir rock and not the confectionery.
In the wee red town where several sons are immortalised in commemorative stone slabs, playwright JM Barrie and his most famous creation are the biggest draws, attracting global interest all year round.
Kirrie and its annual autumn festival also hold a pretty special place in the heart of Scottish music fans, but for the next two days AC/DC and legendary frontman Bon Scott will call the tune.
The rock star lifestyle claimed Scott in 1980 at just 33 but he has never been forgotten by the band’s massive worldwide following or, importantly, the Angus town.
Kirriemuir’s volunteer-run DD8 Music group organises the Bon Fest weekend which has gathered momentum each year, drawing visitors from across the UK and Europe.
Headlining the Kirriemuir Town Hall gigs tonight and tomorrow will be Boun Scotch from Italy and Bon, the AC/DC Show from Germany respectively.
Bon Fest 2013 will be extra special for two other reasons. DD8 Music will recreate one of AC/DC’s most memorable videos when Boun Scotch take to the back of a lorry for a performance of Long Way to the Top.
The organisers are hopeful a huge crowd will add to the spectacle of the video shoot.
And seven years after the first Bon Fest was held, this weekend will see the official fundraising launch of a campaign to create a statue of the singer in his home town.
The work is to be created by Scottish sculptor John McKenna, whose work includes the Jock Stein memorial outside Celtic Park.
