An Arbroath man has been jailed for four months at the town’s sheriff court for assaulting a police officer.
David Simon Melvin, 20, of North Grimsby, was jailed after he admitted kicking the police officer in the groin at Arbroath Police Station on Thursday.
He also admitted that he had breached a bail curfew that he reside at his home address between 7am and 7pm by being at the Red Lion Caravan Park on Dundee Road, Arbroath, at 25 minutes past midnight on Thursday.
Depute fiscal Hazel Anderson said: “Police had been called to a caravan park in respect of an alleged disturbance at 0025 hours and found the accused hiding under a bed.
“He was belligerent and under the influence of alcohol and was conveyed to the police station and placed in a holding cell.
“While his clothing was being removed, he kicked the constable in the groin, causing the constable considerable pain for 10 minutes.”
Defence agent Nick Markowski said police were called to the caravan park after he had been drinking with a friend of his late mother.
Mr Markowski said: “He got himself upset and told police that he was going to kill himself. As is procedure, the police put him in a holding cell and removed his clothing for his own safety.
“He apologises to the court for his actions. It was an alcohol-related incident. No medical attention was required.
“He is 20 years old and has had an extremely difficult upbringing and he is someone who has been a persistent offender at the point of being institutionalised.”
Sheriff Kevin Veal sentenced Melvin to four months for the assault and two months for the bail breach, with the sentences to run concurrently.
Melvin also admitted that on April 12 at Sidney Street, while on bail, he banged and kicked a door and shouted to demand entry to the alarm of people residing there while on bail.
Sheriff Veal deferred sentence until September 3 for Melvin to be of good behaviour and ordered a supplementary social work report.
