Carnoustie pool vandals branded ‘morons’

The paddling pool area had to be closed due to vandalism.

Vandals who have forced the closure of a popular Angus play area attraction have been branded “morons” by a fuming councillor.

As the holiday season continues in full swing, the paddling pool at Carnoustie’s Sandy Sensation has been shut after being targeted for the second time this year.

On Thursday night the vandals stripped part of the covering from the bottom of the popular pool, leaving Angus Council officials with no choice but to seal it off until repairs can be completed, hopefully within the coming week.

Similar damage was done to the pool earlier this year and Carnoustie councillor Brian Boyd has condemned the vandals for their summer spoiler, which could cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

“I am absolutely livid that this has happened again. What are these morons playing at?” he said.

“We have been enjoying one of the nicest summers for years and on my daily walk with my dog I pass the Sandy Sensation.

“It has been absolutely heartwarming to see the numbers of children enjoying the paddling pool and play area, and for a few people to spoil it for so many others just makes my blood boil.”

Mr Boyd added: “A lot of money has been spent on making this park one of the nicest spots in Angus and it’s not only Carnoustie residents who get so much enjoyment out of it, but visitors from throughout Angus and much further afield.

“I’m really glad that the council are doing what they can to get the paddling pool back into operation as quickly as possible but it is such a disappointment that this has happened midway through the Dundee fortnight and while the school holidays are still ongoing.”

An official council statement said: “It is extremely disappointing that a tiny minority of anti-social individuals are spoiling the facilities which we provide, at great public expense and at times of severe budget cuts, for the benefit of the whole community.

“To ensure the safety of visitors, we have closed the site until the repairs can be carried out next week.

“Anyone who has any information about this latest incident, or who wishes to discuss any issues relating to vandalism, should call the council ACCESSLine on 08452 777 778 or contact the police.”
