Montrose Tennis Club will serve up another big day in the growth of the club when its takes the wraps off its newly carpeted courts this weekend.

An open day on Saturday heralds the completion of a six-figure project to upgrade the three courts to synthetic grass, as well as installing floodlights at the Warrack Place club.

An investment of £58,844 from sportscotland along with funding from Angus Council Common Good and Community Fund, Awards for All, Colin Grant Trust, Co-operative Community Fund, Gannochy Trust, Robertson Trust, Williamina Skea Trust, Alexander Moncur Trust and club funds has helped to finance the £117,687 project.

The community is being encouraged to come along to the open day from 10am until 4pm, when two Scottish men’s team players will play in an exhibition match.

Youngsters will have the opportunity to enjoy coaching, and for those taking out memberships there are 13 pairs of Wimbledon tickets available in a club ballot.

Club secretary Rhona Alston said: “Without the help of our many funders, the success at Montrose Tennis Club could not have been achieved, so we would take this opportunity to thank everyone.

“Club coach Graeme Walker helps provide a thriving Active Schools programme, all-year competitive play and coaching from beginners to first division players.

“This week five teenagers have completed their tennis leader’s course too. The club has also entered a record number of teams into this year’s Tayside leagues, so there has never been a greater opportunity to take part in this wonderful sport.

“Having the upgraded facility also opens the doors to the community to have greater access and get fit.”

Chief executive of sportscotland Stewart Harris said: “We are delighted to have been involved in this project at Montrose Tennis Club and our investment of £58,844 has helped to transform the club’s courts.

“The refurbished courts will help the club to capitalise on the feelgood factor currently surrounding the sport, thanks to the success of Andy Murray, and encourage more people to become involved in sport and physical activity.”
