Angus man ordered to pay fine and compensation for damage during jealous rage

An Angus man went berserk after a hopeful visit to his ex-girlfriend revealed another man’s car in the drive, a court has heard.

William Culloch, 21, of East Idvies Farm Cottages, near Forfar, kicked two cars and shouted outside a woman’s house in Glenogil, having arrived there in a taxi on November 25.

Depute fiscal Hannah Kennedy told Forfar Sheriff Court on Thursday that the accused had been involved with the complainer for five years and the relationship had ended six weeks before the date in question.

She said: “The woman and her new partner were in the locus, and the accused turns up in a vehicle it was a taxi at about 1am. The complainer woke at the sound of a car and the lights outside.

“The accused banged on the door and shouted that she was a slut, and asked for the complainer’s new partner to come outside and face him.”

He kicked both cars and damaged their wing mirrors.

Sheriff Kevin Veal asked Ms Kennedy how much the damages were valued at. She said the details were hard to come by.

The male’s Vauxhall Insignia was leased from Arnold Clark, who were unable to give a specific cost for the wing mirrors but a full insurance cost of £2,000 was quoted.

The Crown was unable to obtain a figure for damage to the other car, a Volkswagen Golf.

Defence agent Michael Boyd said alcohol had been a factor in the offence.

“Mr Culloch is a 21-year-old first offender and had been in a relationship with the complainer since leaving school,” he said.

“The incident had followed text messages which he thought implied that perhaps they could get back together. It was because of these texts he went on a whim to the house.

“The complainer’s brother came out of the house, told him the other car was that of her new boyfriend that was the first he knew about it.”

Sheriff Veal said: “Turning up after drinking at 1am isn’t the sort of overture to a very calm symphony.” He said the fracas was “an unacceptable piece of conduct.”

Mr Boyd said the incident followed the first occasion his client had consumed alcohol in a long time.

“He has fully accepted the relationship is over and I do not think he comes to the court with likelihood he will come back again,” he added.

Sheriff Veal ordered Culloch to pay a £500 fine and compensation order of £1,000, to be paid back at £100 a month.

Culloch admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner in Glenogil on November 25, throwing stones at a window and kicking two cars and damaging them.
