Arbroath driver caught speeding two weeks after getting licence back

An Arbroath man who drove at twice the speed limit was disqualified at the town’s sheriff court.
Robert Spence (23), of Conon Terrace, admitted driving a car at 61mph in a 30mph zone on Arbirlot Road, Arbroath, on November 27.
Depute fiscal Hazel Anderson said Spence had only had his licence back for two weeks from a previous period of disqualification when the offence took place.
She said: “He was driving in the Timmergreens area of Arbroath, which is heavily populated with lots of driveway and bus stops.
“At 6.54pm, the time of the offence, it was dark and there were damp and icy patches on the road.
“Police officers observed pedestrians on the footpaths including dog walkers and parents with young children. Officers operating the laser gun said they could hear Mr Spence’s car before they saw it due to the excessive revving of his engine.”
Defence agent Billy Rennie said his client’s “mind was elsewhere” and stated he had “lost sight of the speed he was driving”.
Sheriff Peter Paterson disqualified Spence for six months and fined him £400.
He added: “Speeds don’t just creep up to 60mph.”
