An Arbroath man admitted a string of offences at the town’s court.
James Ryan Paton, 22, of Warddykes Avenue, admitted driving a car with excess alcohol (85 mics), without a driver’s licence and without insurance in a car that did not have an MOT test certificate on Noran Avenue, Arbroath, on January 26.
He further admitted threatening violence to two police constables and lashing out with his arms and legs and attempting to struggle while the officers attempted to apply handcuffs on Noran Avenue on the same date.
He also admitted smashing the rear offside window of a police car by repeatedly kicking it on Noran Avenue on the same date.
Paton further admitted that between January 26 and January 28, while in custody at Arbroath Police Station, he wilfully or recklessly destroyed property belonging to another by scratching the word ‘Beezie’ into the cell wall.
Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said police officers on mobile patrol pulled up beside and then followed the yellow BMW car Paton was driving, while he remained completely oblivious to its presence.
She said once his car was stopped the accused behaved “erratically”.
She said: “He was aggressive and increasingly confrontational and the officers placed him in cuffs. By methods unknown, the accused then escaped from his cuffs and struggled with officers while continuing to shout and swear at them.
“He was placed in the police vehicle and the door closed. He then began kicking the rear offside window, causing it to smash.”
She said Paton was later placed in a marked police van and kicked and butted the cage.
A breath test provided later produced the high reading, and Paton stated to officers he had consumed a quarter bottle of cider, Ms Drummond said.
The cost to repair the vandalism to his cell is still to be determined.
Sheriff Peter Paterson ordered a social work and restriction of liberty report and gave Paton an interim driving disqualification until his next court appearance on April 30.
