Two of Scotland’s most recognisable historic properties will cross paths again next year, it has emerged.
Arbroath Abbey, which once housed the Stone of Destiny will once again house the relic or at least its likeness. Abbey owners Historic Scotland confirmed to The Courier that a replica will be delivered to the property.
Arbroath man Wallace Ferrier had asked the body to consider doing so, and was surprised to be able to report “partial success” as plans are already under way.
Mr Ferrier said: “A replica Stone of Destiny and a photo display of the stone pictured next to the high altar in 1951 will be on display within the next 12 months in the visitor centre exhibition.”
Stephen Duncan, director of commercial and tourism for Historic Scotland, said he will consider stocking DVD copies of the 2008 film.
The British-Canadian film starred Billy Boyd and Robert Carlyle, and told the story of the theft of the Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey on December 25 1950.
In his letter to Mr Ferrier, Mr Duncan wrote: “We would agree that the Stone of Destiny has an extremely interesting history and that the connection with Arbroath is one that is worth highlighting to visitors.”
He continued: “The display will tell visitors about the links between the stone and Arbroath, and we would hope to include some photography showing the stone laid next to the high altar in 1951.
“We are aiming for this to be in place by spring 2014. Regarding your request we will consider stocking the DVD and as with all our products we would have to review the sales to ensure that it warrants the space on the shelves.”
A spokeswoman for Historic Scotland said: “The Stone of Destiny has a fascinating history and connection to Arbroath which we want to highlight to our visitors.
“We hope to have a replica Stone of Destiny in the visitor centre exhibition at Arbroath Abbey in place for Spring 2014. The display will tell visitors about the links to the stone and Arbroath.”
