A charity fun day was held in memory of an Angus teenager who died of cancer earlier this year.
The event at Murton Nature Reserve was organised by Forfar Academy in memory of pupil Laura Forbes, 16, who died in February after a minor fall on a Duke of Edinburgh hillwalking trip led to her being diagnosed with cancer of the knee.
A similar fundraising event was held last year, which raised thousands of pounds for charity, and the school has vowed to make it an annual event.
A total of 33 runners paid £10 to take part in a 10k race around Murton, with Brian Bonnyman from Forfar winning the men’s prize and Erin Brown from Letham the first lady home.
Their shields were presented by Laura’s younger brother, 11-year-old Daniel. A sponsored walk took place during the day, with pupils from Forfar Academy and from Whitehills, Strathmore and Langlands primary schools taking part.
Other attractions on the day included a falconry display, a home baking stall, treasure hunt, raffle, tombola, face painting, assault course, beat the goalie, ferret racing and duck racing.
Forfar Academy principal teacher of pupil care and support, Euan Gow, said: “Last year the community rallied round to support Laura and it was such a good event we decided to hold it again.
“We have also decided to name our school prize for biology in fifth year after Laura.”
Charities that will benefit this year are Angus Riding for the Disabled, Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, Trussell Trust and Calum’s Cabin.
Laura’s mother Audrey said: “Calum’s Cabin is based on the Isle of Bute and is used for respite care.
“We went there in November and Laura loved it so we selected it for some of the money raised. We’re pleased that the event has been so well attended and that several charities will benefit.”
