Norman Alexander, a Merchant Navy sea captain from Carnoustie, has died aged 86.
Mr Alexander was born in Broughty Ferry in 1927 and attended Grove Academy. He trained at Leith Nautical College before joining Ropner Brothers shipping company in 1943 and qualified as a captain at 27.
In 1957 he joined Palmline and sailed ships from West Africa to Liverpool or London, importing palm oil that was used to make soap.
That year he married Mina, who he had met at a Dundee dance, and they set up home in Carnoustie. They had three sons David, Norman and John.
In 1977 Mr Alexander joined Dundee Port Authority as marine superintendent. From there he was promoted to assistant harbour master and from there he worked at port control until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by his three children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
