Carnoustie High Street fire: shops may have to be demolished
ByRichard Watt
A WEEKEND fire that consumed shops on Carnoustie High Street may result in their demolition.
The Carnoustie High Street grocer and launderette owned by businessman and councillor Bill Bowles were gutted by fire on Friday night.
An engineer visited on Monday and warned they may need to be knocked down.
The fire is not being treated as suspicious by police, and it is thought that the cause could have been electrical.
A police spokesman said: “It is possible that it was caused by an electrical issue at the rear of the premises.
“Building engineers are to attend today to see if the building needs to be demolished.”

Mr Bowles previously told The Courier how he hopes to resurrect the business “from the ashes”.
He added: “There was due to be a structural assessment to look at it the initial assessment was that the front of the building and balustrade should be okay to be saved, so we can keep the frontage.
“The back is most questionable because that is where the majority of the blaze was.”
