AN ANGUS school has welcomed the county’s first female secondary head teacher. Doreen Redfern (50) became the new head teacher of Arbroath Academy this week, following the retirement of former rector David MacDonald in December. Mrs Redfern said she is delighted to be taking on her new role and joins the school after five years as deputy head teacher at Carnoustie High School. “I came in before the New Year and met with David and he told me how wonderful all the staff are,” she said. “I’m delighted to be here and to get started.” The BA-qualified maths and PE teacher hails from Pitlochry and moved to Angus in 2008 to take on the role at Carnoustie. Before that she spent 16 years as principal teacher of maths at Breadalbane Academy in Aberfeldy. Mrs Redfern also enjoyed teaching spells south of the border after graduating. The mother-of-three is looking forward to her new role, her first head position, and added that she is enjoying her first week in the job.
