The role of Angus in next year’s Commonwealth Games is “the biggest opportunity to showcase what the county has to offer”.
Barry Buddon in Carnoustie will showcase the shooting events portion of Glasgow 2014, an event that will see thousands of competitors, supporters and games staff spend up to eight days on the east coast.
With an eye on potential revenue a steering group has been set up to get the most out of the rare opportunity.
Its chief elected member, Councillor Jeanette Gaul, told The Courier: “We want to attract as many people into Angus as possible, including those who might not be staying here.
“A list of events and attractions will be made available to other countries in advance of their arrival.
“This will be of interest to those who would be interested in our country parks, golf, historic attractions like Glamis Castle and the like. The competitors will not be shooting every day.
“It’s going to bring people into Angus and we’re promoting our hotels and B&Bs in brochures.”
A working arrangement with Dundee City Council would make sure transport and accommodation would go without a hitch, Mrs Gaul added.
The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will take place between July 23 and August 4. Athletes, officials and visitors from 71 Commonwealth Games Federation member countries are expected to attend.
South Angus MSP Graeme Dey said the shooting events had “potential to provide Angus with a great economic and tourism boost”.
“Not only that, it would showcase the area to tourists, competitors and those involved with the games,” he added.
“There will be lots of opportunities for contracts and sub-contracts for local firms, and for volunteers, too.”
Mr Dey said he had discussed the local authority’s plans with Mrs Gaul and he said the committee is “trying to get the message across as to what makes the county so special”.
He believes next year’s events can build on what the Olympics achieved.
