A respected pillar of Angus society was questioned over a haul of “weapons and ammunition” found in his home.
The Courier reported how a police call-out on Eastmill Brae, Brechin, turned into a full-scale bomb disposal effort.
It has now emerged local community councillor Mark Law (51) owns the house, near the Victoria Bar, and is helping police with their inquiries.
Tayside Police confirmed the operation went ahead on the East side of town, not Westmuir, as reported elsewhere.
Jogger Graham Larbert, who was passing through the East end of town on Wednesday night on his way back from a late meeting, said Montrose Road was lit up “like a fairground attraction” and he ran over to investigate.
“I had thought that someone had gotten into a fight but it looked like a much bigger disturbance than that, so I crossed over the road to have a look,” he said.
“There were several vehicles on the street at the time and I didn’t recognise the uniform. Only now I realise that all the going back and forth was kit getting taken into the house, or out of it.”
A force spokeswoman said: “While carrying out inquiries at a residential address… Tayside Police officers were alerted to the presence of weapons and ammunition within the property.
“Explosives Ordnance Disposal were called to attend and, although there was no immediate threat to public safety, the area was cordoned off as a precaution while further inquiry took place.
“An investigation into the full set of circumstances is continuing today and a 51-year-old man is assisting police with their inquiries.
“A report on the matter will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.”
Tayside Police control room was alerted to the find of “inert trophies of war”, including hand grenades, at about 4.20pm.
