An Angus sports club hopes to stage a competition that will attract competitors from all over Scotland. The traditional Scottish sport of backhold wrestling has long been a fixture of Highland games and is gaining in popularity in the area. Carnoustie Backhold Wrestling club founder Frazer Hirsch is helping organise a competition for those of all ages and abilities on April 7. He said: “We’ve still got some weight categories to be confirmed but we hope it will cover Scotland and the north-east. “It’s a traditional style of wrestling and it’s been recorded as far back as the 6th or 8th centuries.” https://youtube.com/watch?v=0gN5nS67kuM%3Frel%3D0 A total of 150 wrestlers compete for Scottish clubs alone, with a similar number from north-east England. Mr Hirsch has appeared in The Courier’s reports of Highland games results, with almost 20 years of experience. For more details call Mr Hirsch on 07828 122985.
