A man died in a tragedy at Arbroath cliffs at the weekend.
The man, who is yet to be named by police, was found dead on rocks near the town’s Victoria Park by emergency services after a dog walker raised the alarm early on Saturday afternoon.
The call-out was made after the walker reported seeing what they believed to be a person at the bottom of the cliffs, just north of Victoria Park, shortly before 1pm.
Arbroath’s all weather lifeboat Inchcape and the town station’s inshore lifeboat, as well as coastguard units from Arbroath and Carnoustie, attended the incident.
An RNLI spokesman said the lifeboats were launched within minutes and four crew members one from the inshore and three from the all-weather lifeboat were put ashore when they reached the scene.
”It was quickly established that this was not a rescue situation and Tayside Police requested that the scene be preserved while they despatched specialist officers,” he added.
RNLI crew remained at the scene while both lifeboats returned to the station and collected police before returning to the scene of the tragedy.
Specialist officers spent some time at the scene completing their inquiries before the man’s body was recovered by the inshore lifeboat and then passed over to the all-weather lifeboat, returning to station around 4pm.
In a brief statement, police confirmed the man’s death.
”Investigations are ongoing but there appears to be no suspicious circumstances,” said a police spokesman.
Arbroath councillor David Fairweather said it was distressing to learn of the tragedy.
”My heart goes out to the family and friends of this man, I can only imagine what they are going through and they have my sincere sympathies,” he said.
He also praised all the emergency services for their role in the incident.
