An Angus pensioner woke to find what is believed to be pig slurry had been poured through her letterbox.
The disgusting discovery and vandalism to the householder’s car parked outside is being investigated by police.
Officers were called to the house in North Esk Road, Edzell, on Tuesday morning, but the crime could have taken place any time after 10pm the previous day.
A police spokesman said, “The householders had been asleep and one of them, a man in his 40s, noticed around 4am that there was a funny smell in the house.
“The other occupant, a woman in her 70s, got up subsequently and she too noticed a funny smell. At around 9.30am she found that what is believed to be pig slurry had been poured through the letterbox.
“It had covered a considerable amount of carpet and also splashed onto the walls.
“When the man went outside he also discovered a scratch along the side of his Ford Fiesta.”
Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact police on 0300 111 2222.
