Parents played hookey from work to go back to school at Letham Primary.

And a few were getting pretty poor marks when their kids took charge of the teaching as part of the school’s celebrating success event on Tuesday.

Even head teacher Karen Frain admitted she failed one of the spelling tests with words like disestablishmentarianism on the list set by the youngsters.

“Don’t ask me how to spell it,” said Miss Frain. “I have not a clue!”

The whole school was involved in the open day, with mums, dads and grannies turning up.

“This is the children’s opportunity to show what they have done this year and show the things they are proud of,” said Miss Frain.

“They have been setting tasks for their parents and even set them homework. The point is to show parents what education in the 21st century looks like and feels like.”

The adults discovered that homework has not gone out of fashion and their mini tutors took delight in setting tasks.

There was no evidence of any adults refusing to do it, though a few did have help. And Miss Frain gave top marks to the visitors for application and attendance.

“We are really well supported in this area with parents who are really interested in their children’s education,” she said.
