A special yacht race to and from the Bell Rock Lighthouse will take place on Saturday during the Year of the Light celebrations.
The regatta is the latest event organised to mark the 200th anniversary of the lighthouse 11 miles off the coast of Arbroath.
Fifteen boats are expected to take part in the challenge, which kicks off at 8.30am. The first vessels are expected to arrive back in Arbroath harbour shortly after midday.
In the evening the 299 Lodge will host a special ceremony for the winners, where sponsors Mainstream Renewable Power and RM Buildbase will present trophies.
Clive Wedge, of Arbroath Sailing and Boating Club, said that those who did not wish to take part in the race could still visit the Bell Rock by joining club members for a more relaxed journey to the lighthouse in the afternoon.
He said, “Following the race we’d love other local sailors and boat owners to join members of Arbroath Sailing and Boating Club on a leisurely cruise to the Bell Rock.
“Hopefully a flotilla of sailing vessels of all shapes and sizes will sail out to the Bell Rock on Saturday afternoon, so it should be quite a sight when we all head out of the harbour.
“However, the Year of the Light Regatta is weather dependent and the decision on whether or not to sail will be made at the latest possible time by the organisers.”
Chairman of the Year of the Light steering committee Harry Simpson said he was heartened by how many local organisations had become involved in all of the festivities.
Mr Simpson has spearheaded a campaign that has attracted international attention to the bicentenary of the Bell Rock.
Mr Simpson said, “It’s wonderful how so many local organisations such as Arbroath Sailing and Boating Club have embraced the Year of the Light, Arbroath’s celebrations of the bicentenary of the Bell Rock Lighthouse.
“For 200 years the Bell Rock Lighthouse has been protecting mariners from the deadly reef on which it’s perched so it’s highly appropriate that sailors, mariners and boat owners will be celebrating the Year of the Light by participating in Saturday’s regatta.”
