People in an Angus village are being urged to help identify a mystery dumper responsible for “fly-tipping” at a recycling site.
The culprit has been regularly dumping rubbish at the Letham recycling depot including everything from bleach and rubbish bags to a pair of slip-on shoes. Some of it is recycling material but has just been thrown down at the bins.
Now people in the village are being urged to remain vigilant and shop the dumper and save the clean-up burden on the taxpayer.
Councillor Donald Morrison has taken up the issue with Angus Council chiefs after becoming fed up with the constant mess being left.
He said: “I was there yesterday and someone has left shoes and bags of rubbish. It’s a regular person and we need to get the community to keep an eye out.
“There are bags of cans but the person is refusing to put them in the bin. There are cardboard boxes, papers, plastic bags and at one point there was a heater left dumped.
“There were even brand new slip-on shoes lying there yesterday. It could be a hive for gulls or a hive for rats if it keeps getting dumped there.”
Mr Morrison said the dumping was costing the council money.
“I’ve had to report it now five or six times and the council can only do so much. I am really now calling on the community to be the eyes and ears to stamp this out.
“Goodness knows what could be getting dumped there anyway. I have seen huge industrial-size bleach bottles.
“In a way it’s fly-tipping and it’s a mystery dumper. Everybody obviously has their suspicions and this person must have a bin.
“It’s extremely annoying virtually every time I have to go there to do my recycling it starts to build up again.
“It’s a shame because everybody is obviously trying to recycle. It’s not fair on the council and it’s not fair on the community either.”
A spokeswoman for Angus Council said: “The council is aware of this issue at the Letham recycling point and we would urge users to ensure they dispose of their materials in the correct container.
“There are signs at the site warning against fly tipping and if anyone sees materials being dumped at the site they are asked to contact the council on 08452 777 778.”
