A young racing driver from Angus is preparing to take on the British Touring Cars at Knockhill.
Fiona Wallace (21) from Carnoustie took up racing four years ago, while she was still at the town’s high school.
Since then, she has carved a niche for herself in the sport and is now in her second season at the top of the women’s game racing in the Scottish Motor Racing Club (SMRC) Mini Championship.
On Saturday she will compete against 26 other racers and will be out on the circuit at the same time as the touring cars during the practice laps.
Fiona said competing in front of 15,000 fans on a weekend featuring some of the country’s top drivers, would be the realisation of a childhood dream.
She said: “It is a great opportunity for everybody associated with the Mini Championship to show what they can do in front of a massive crowd.
“It was the touring cars that first got me interested in racing, so to be involved in the same event is quite a big deal and even though I won’t be competing against them, just being there with them will be quite poignant.”
The second Mini race of the weekend takes place on Sunday and over the course of the meet, Fiona will be rubbing shoulders with top professionals and racing idols such as Gordon Shedden, Matt Neal, and Jason Plato.
Her father Ian Wallace said: “Fiona is doing very well this year in the very competitive SMRC Mini Championship.
“She is sitting mid-table overall, but is currently leading the Ladies Championship where she is up against five other girl racers. She is being chased hard by Elaine Marshall and Emma Bruce.
“This event is unique as there is no other ladies’ championship in any motor racing anywhere in the UK so well done the Scottish lassies.”
The Courier featured Fiona when she took up the sport as a confident 17-year-old.
Now an established racer, she has graduated to racing Minis, from her early days in souped-up Ford Fiesta XR2 models.
