A Mearns man who falsely told police his sister had been raped was said to be “embarrassed and ashamed”.
Keiron Roderick McKay Massie (18) made the claim while drunk after he had been thrown out of an Angus hotel.
Massie, of Davidson Place, St Cyrus, sat with his head bowed as the details emerged at Arbroath Sheriff Court.
Massie previously admitted that on March 6 he falsely reported that his sister had been raped by a man outside the Hillside Hotel in Montrose.
He pleaded not guilty to telling police there was a man in possession of a knife at the same hotel. The plea was accepted by the Crown.
Depute fiscal Hazel Anderson said Massie was heavily under the influence of alcohol.
Defence agent Nick Markowski told the court: “He would like to apologise for his actions.”
Mr Markowski said his client had gone to a party and was thrown out of the hotel.
He added: “It was out of this that he made the call about the hotel.”
Sheriff Kenneth McGowan heard the police had wasted £143 in wages after two officers investigated the allegations.
The sheriff ordered Massie to pay £143 compensation in the circumstances and imposed a community payback order for a period of three months.
During this time Massie must carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.
