A spurned lover has been jailed for a vampire-style attack where he repeatedly bit his ex-partner’s neck.
Andrew Brennan from Arbroath knocked his teenage former girlfriend to the floor with a headbutt, before pouncing on her and sinking his teeth into her three or four times.
The 22-year-old previously admitted the assault at his home in the town’s Newton Avenue on March 21, when he appeared from custody at Arbroath Sheriff Court.
Back in the dock for sentencing on Tuesday, Brennan was jailed for four months backdated to the time of the incident.
Fiscal depute Arlene Shaw said the 18-year-old victim had been in a relationship with her attacker for one-and-a-half years prior to the struggle.
”The complainer attended at the accused’s home address and an argument ensued. The accused asked her why they shouldn’t rekindle the relationship. She refused and he approached her and headbutted her to the face, causing her to sway backwards.
”She then fell to the ground, where the accused repeatedly bit her on the neck.”
The teenager left Brennan’s address after the incident and it wasn’t until she discussed what had happened with a relative that the police were contacted.
When Brennan was arrested he admitted what he had done stating to officers and said: ”I headbutted her. She will have a lump.”
During an interview later, he fully admitted the attack, but claimed his former partner had assaulted him.
When asked about the injuries to her neck, he stated: ”I was biting her, more like love marks. I did that instead of punching her.”
Defence agent Billy Rennie said his client had learning difficulties and he might benefit from being placed on a high tariff structured deferred sentence as an alternative to prison.
Sheriff Peter Paterson said it was with ”great sadness” that he sentenced Brennan to four months’ imprisonment, as he had made some progress since the incident.
He added: ”This is the fourth time you have come before this court over an assault of a domestic nature and under these circumstances I have no alternative but to impose a custodial sentence.”
