Arbroath residents were in shock after a man was found dead in the street and a woman left battling for her life at the height of the school run.
Passers-by alerted the emergency services at around 3pm on Wednesday after the 27-year-old woman was discovered lying unconscious in a puddle outside the entrance to the Mayfield Foodstore in Mayfield Terrace.
Police and ambulance crews discovered the 27-year-old dead man lying nearby on a patch of waste ground. He has now been named as Stuart (possibly Stewart) Carrie of St Vigeans Road in Arbroath. His family have been notified.
The authorities have refused to reveal the cause of the incident until after their investigation is complete but both are understood to be known drug users.
Residents who witnessed the events unfold have described the moment that the police first arrived on the scene and desperately worked to revive the woman with life-saving CPR techniques.
After resuscitating her they rushed to help Mr Carrie but he died at the scene.
Witnesses were full of praise for the efforts of the police and emergency crews but they were also horrified that the sad event had played out while schoolchildren were heading home.
The woman was recovering in Ninewells Hospital on Wednesday night, where she was described by police as “conscious and breathing.” Her condition is now described as stable.
