Tragedy has struck Arbroath’s RM Condor base for the second time in nine days after the death of another young serviceman and his sister in a horrific car crash.
Captain Michael Strachan (28), a member of 45 Commando, and his sister Maia Strachan (26) were killed when the TVR sports car they were in crashed.
It is understood Capt Strachan had celebrated his wedding less than two weeks ago.
Lieutenant Colonel Oliver Lee paid tribute, saying, “We are all deeply saddened about the tragic and untimely death of Captain Michael Strachan.
“He was an outstanding officer who was quite literally larger than life.”
He added that Capt Strachan would be remembered for his “inspirational leadership and strong, charismatic approach”.
“He will be sorely missed and never forgotten. The thoughts and prayers of all at 45 Commando are with Captain Strachan and his family.”
The brother and sister were killed when the powerful sports car crashed on the B979 Stonehaven to Netherley road in Aberdeenshire at about 8.10pm on Wednesday. No other vehicles are thought to have been involved.
The tragedy comes as RM Condor continues to mourn the death of 24-year-old Marine Carl Harrison, who died from injuries he sustained when his Vauxhall Astra left the road just yards from the entrance to the base on November 9.
