A Dundee College lecturer has unveiled an art exhibition that opens a door on one the most politically isolated states in the world Cuba.
Angus McEwan, a member of the Royal Watercolour Society, unveils his work at the Gallery Q in Dundee’s Nethergate this weekend.
Entitled Mirror Image, the exhibition comprises 17 watercolours on collaged paper surfaces and draws upon the artist’s experience from a trip to Cuba.
Angus, who is also a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters of Watercolour, was particularly inspired by the capital city of Havana.
“I found that the neglect brought about by the political situation, particularly the US trade embargo, creates an endless supply of superb source material for an artist like me,” said the lecturer.
“Despite the lack of resources and finances Havana is a living city, still growing and expanding, showing all the signs of an ageing beauty, dowdy but still immensely proud.”‘Time reveals character’Angus is fascinated with the passing of time and how it affects everyday objects.
The paintings included in Mirror Image, while reflecting the ageing process, tend to highlight the beauty that is revealed rather than the ravages associated with age.
“Time reveals character within all that it touches,” Angus said.
“The worn beauty which is slowly coaxed out of peeling paint, rotten wood, rusted implements or wind-torn rock all appeal to me.”
While the artist may identify the beauty within the wear and tear brought about by age, Angus is enjoying lecturing in the brand new surroundings of the Gardyne Campus the £48m facility has undergone a modern design, and is filled with light and air.
Mirror Images opens at Gallery Q and runs until Saturday, October 15.
