A moving remembrance ceremony was held in Dundee on Saturday to pay tribute to those lost at sea. Wreaths were laid during the Dundee International Submarine Memorial service in honour of the sacrifices made by hundreds of Dundee seamen. Dundee was the base of the Royal Navy’s 2nd Submarine Flotilla in 1939 and from 1940 to 1946 it was the base of the 9th Submarine Flotilla, an international force composed of British units along with Free French, Dutch, Norwegian and Polish crews. Russian submarine crews were also based in Dundee in the summer of 1944. The annual memorial service commemorates the six British, Dutch, Norwegian and Russian submarines lost on operations from Dundee.
