Tempers flared at a public meeting in Dundee on Thursday night to discuss the proposed closure of Menzieshill High School.
Hundreds of parents and pupils attended the stormy public consultation event to discuss education bosses’ plans to close the school and move its 487 pupils to the new build Harris Academy.
Dundee City Council education director Michael Wood faced a grilling over the proposal, with one former staff member accusing the authority of having “made their minds up already” about closing the city school.
Mr Wood insisted Harris Academy would not be overcrowded as a result of the move and said it was “a bit of an insult” when accused by one man of paying “lip service to the community”.
Other issues highlighted during the
consultation meeting included transportation concerns, a lack of outdoor facilities at the new Harris and the fact that bullied pupils moved to Menzieshill would have to return to their former schools.
The education committee have agreed in principle to close Menzieshill High School at the close of the 2015/16 session.
Children in the catchment area for Harris Academy and Menzieshill High School will have a place at the new Harris building, the council has guaranteed.
A decision on the proposed closure is set to be made in May.
