Councillors have been told the West End has become nothing more than a “student ghetto”.
Residents told the licensing committee that the volume of young people living in the area had begun to hurt the community.
Mary Mackenzie said: “The West End has always had a large student population. The difference now is that the volume of students has increased to the point that it is hurting the community.
“There are now 17,000 attending Dundee University alone and people are snapping up properties, putting locks on every door and starting HMOs.
“I am not against students far from it, as I was a student myself in my ’50s but is it so unreasonable to complain when someone has vomited in your vegetable patch, when they have used your garden as a toilet or your children cannot sleep because of noise from a party.
“We need a more balanced community as it is top heavy with transient students.”
Councillor Jimmy Black sympathised with the objector’s experiences but described the words “student ghetto” by Mrs Mackenzie a letter as “a little over the top”.
